Cells belong to exactly one cage, but cages share rows, columns, and blocks. Placing 4 in a cell may complete a two-cell cage budget while simultaneously eliminating 4 from three neighboring cages’ combination menus through unit rules. Advanced solvers trace both directions: forward from placement to affected cages, backward from a stalled cage to cells whose candidates still pollute its menus.

When two cages share a row, a forced set in one cage may occupy digits that the other cage needed—creating intersection pressure before either cage looks “closed.” Map shared units explicitly on scratch paper for Expert boards: list cage IDs touching each incomplete row. The map feels tedious once; it prevents ten-minute contradictions later.

Intersection kills across combination menus

An intersection kill happens when every surviving combination for a cage agrees on a digit in a particular cell—forcing that digit even though no single combination was unique alone. This aggregate view exposes impossibilities: a fragment cannot demand digits summing above the row’s remaining allowance.

Region sums are optional scaffolding—use them when local cage menus feel ambiguous. On 6×6, mental totals stay manageable. Write the row remainder on scratch paper when four cages intersect one row on Expert boards; erase when the row completes.

Naked and hidden pairs in cage-filtered notes

Once pencil marks reflect cage and unit filtering, standard Sudoku pair logic applies within rows, columns, and blocks—provided cage constraints still permit both digits in both cells. A naked pair {4, 6} in a row eliminates 4 and 6 from other row cells only if cage budgets allow those eliminations.

Hidden pairs—two digits appearing only in two cells of a unit—appear more often on Hard boards after cage filtering thins candidates. Spot them by sorting notes mentally per digit across the unit. Pair logic bridges toward Expert without importing 9×9-only techniques that ignore cage sums.

Binary probes with propagation discipline

Expert boards occasionally require binary probes: assume candidate A in a cell, propagate forced singles through cages, blocks, and rows until contradiction or completion. Probes are lawful when only two candidates remain and marks are honest—not when frustration peaks. Full propagation means updating every affected cage budget, not just the local row.

If both branches survive shallow propagation, deepen the probe or revisit marks for staleness before coin flipping. The no-guess philosophy in solve without guessing applies at every tier; Expert only makes sloppy probes costlier.

Expert habits that prevent collapses

Neighbor refresh: after every fill, update all cages sharing the cell. Budget line: keep remaining sum and empty cell count for active cages in margin notes.
