Cage sums and combinations for Mini Killer

On a 1–6 grid, every cage label has a finite menu—learn to list them fast.

Mini Killer Sudoku on ProPuz is arithmetic dressed as a puzzle. Each dotted cage shows a sum; the digits inside must add to that total and cannot repeat within the cage. On a 6×6 board using digits 1 through 6, those constraints produce small, learnable combination menus—far smaller than on a 9×9 Killer grid. This article teaches you to list legal sets systematically, memorize the high-leverage extremes, and recognize when a cage forces placements before Sudoku units do. Why combination fluency matters on empty starts

ProPuz Mini Killer boards begin with no givens—only cage outlines and sum labels. The first forced digits always emerge from cage arithmetic intersecting row, column, and 2×3 block rules. If you guess pairs because they “feel right,” you will eventually violate cage uniqueness or break a sum budget. Listing combinations is not optional homework; it is how empty grids become solvable grids.

The good news: with only six digits, menus stay short. A two-cell cage has at most five legal pairs. A three-cell cage has fewer triples than you might fear once you exclude repeats. Fluency on Easy boards means recognizing sum 11 as {5, 6} without pencil work; fluency on Hard and Expert means updating menus quickly after partial fills shrink remaining budgets.

Two-cell cages: the workhorse menus

Two-cell cages appear on nearly every ProPuz Mini Killer puzzle. Minimum sum is 3 ({1, 2}); maximum is 11 ({5, 6}). Between those endpoints, each label has a predictable count of distinct pairs. Sum 4 allows only {1, 3}. Sum 5 allows {1, 4} or {2, 3}. Sum 6 allows {1, 5}, {2, 4}. Sum 7 allows {1, 6}, {2, 5}, {3, 4}. Sum 8 allows {2, 6}, {3, 5}. Sum 9 allows {3, 6}, {4, 5}. Sum 10 allows only {4, 6}.

Notice the symmetry: sums equidistant from the center share pair counts. Extremes 3, 4, 10, and 11 each have exactly one menu entry—those are your opening anchors on empty boards. When a partial fill removes one option—say a 5 already sits in the cage—recalculate instantly: a two-cell cage of sum 10 with 4 placed must hold 6 in the partner cell.

Three-cell cages: extremes and mid-range patterns

Three-cell cages add combinatorial width but still stay bounded on 1–6. Minimum sum 6 forces {1, 2, 3}. Maximum sum 15 forces {4, 5, 6}. Those two anchors behave like the two-cell endpoints—memorize them first. Mid-range sums require listing, but repeats are forbidden, so {2, 2, 3} never appears as a legal triple.

A practical listing method: fix the smallest digit and enumerate partners. For sum 12 in three cells, start with 1 in the set—then partners must sum to 11 with distinct digits from {2, 3, 4, 5, 6}, giving {1, 5, 6} as the only triple containing 1. Continue with smallest digit 2, then 3, crossing duplicates. On paper this takes seconds; mentally it becomes pattern memory after a dozen boards.

How to list legal sets without a chart

When you encounter an unfamiliar cage mid-solve, use a three-step recipe. First, note cage size and remaining empty cells—partial fills change the target. Second, subtract placed digits from the clue to get the remaining sum budget. Third, list combinations of that size using digits 1–6 without repeats that hit the budget exactly.

Example: a three-cell cage labeled 12 with a 4 already placed needs two distinct partners summing to 8 from {1, 2, 3, 5, 6}. Legal pairs are {2, 6} and {3, 5}. If one partner cell shares a row with 6, {2, 6} dies and {3, 5} survives—or a single cell may be forced if only one digit fits cage and unit rules together. This subtract-and-list rhythm appears throughout step-by-step solving.

When cages force placements before units do

Forced placements fall into three buckets. Unique combinations: sum 11 in two cells locks {5, 6} even if you do not yet know orientation. Intersection kills: multiple combinations share a digit in one cell position after unit eliminations—if every menu containing cell A also demands 3, cell A is 3. Sum exhaustion: only one digit can satisfy the remaining budget given row, column, block, and cage bans.

Combining cage menus with 2×3 blocks

A legal cage combination is not automatically placeable. Digits must also respect Sudoku units. A cage forcing {1, 6} across two cells straddling a block boundary may have only one orientation because 6 is banned from half the block. Always cross-check combination menus against row, column, and block candidates before writing digits.

Building combination memory for daily play

Flashcard the two-cell extremes first: 3, 4, 10, 11. Add three-cell 6 and 15 next. Then fill mid-range pairs during Easy sessions on ProPuz—each board drills sums in context better than rote tables. When a menu feels slow to list, pause and write it once on scratch paper; the act of writing cements faster recall than rereading a chart.

Track which sums trick you most often. Many beginners stumble on sum 9 ({3, 6} vs {4, 5}) because both pairs look plausible until unit bans narrow them. Naming the pair aloud when you list it reduces silent arithmetic errors that Check later exposes.
