How to play missing letters

Some letters are hidden—figure out the full word and type it in.

Missing letters shows a themed word with random letters replaced by underscores. Use the visible letters and the theme as clues, then enter the complete spelling. When you get it right, the puzzle celebrates in place—no page reload.

Goal

Each puzzle displays a masked word like C_T or _A_GLE—underscores mark hidden letters, while shown letters stay fixed. Deduce the hidden word from the pattern and theme, then type the full word (not just the missing letters) to complete the puzzle.

Controls

Type your answer in the Full word field, then press Check answer or hit Enter. Guesses are not case-sensitive; punctuation is ignored.

A timer tracks elapsed time. Correct answers stop the clock and show a completion message. Wrong guesses stay on screen with feedback so you can try again.

Difficulty & themes

On the missing letters home, pick a theme and difficulty. Higher tiers use longer words and hide a larger share of letters:

  • Easy — about 4–6 letters, ~35% hidden
  • Medium — about 5–8 letters, ~45% hidden
  • Hard — about 6–10 letters, ~55% hidden
  • Expert — about 7–12 letters, ~65% hidden

Tips

Count blanks and match word length, use the theme (animals, nature, etc.), and look for common endings (-ING, -ED). At least one letter always stays visible. More help in our beginner tips article.
